Paintings and Drawings
Enrico Santini
Santini's book includes color reproductions of entire series of transitional work that is both highly abstract and often figurative, including line drawings on paper. Many important series are represented such as the Dreamers, Pools, Night Balconies and an extended sequence from the Vinyard paintings. The book includes many works that have never been exhibited or illustrated anywhere else and which are now buried in private collections. As Santini explains in his introduction, the book is laid out to "reveal certain formal developments" and relationships. He also includes a note explaining how ReeL's opus numbers work [called "catalog numbers" in Santini's text]. The book also includes most of the Lighthouse paintings, including the two major oils, opus 172 and 173, Lighthouse and Lighthouse I, that were damaged beyond repair in the fire that destroyed the original Caruso / Woods gallery in Santa Barbara where a number of ReeL's paintings and drawings were stored. Heavily illustrated in full color. The cover painting is the luminous opus 647, Viva Catalonia, oil on panel [mislabeled as being an acrylic in the book], 122 x 81 cm, 48 x 32 inches, from 2002, based on a Picasso Seated Woman, painted shortly after ReeL returned from a trip to Paris and Barcelona.
